NIA raids 9 districts of Tamil Nadu: Raid keys, many documents and digital devices recovered from PFI members’ houses in Ramalingam murder case

Ramalingam was killed in February 2019 by members of the PFI for opposing forced conversions.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Sunday conducted raids in 9 districts of Tamil Nadu in the Ramalingam murder case. The investigating agency conducted search operations at 21 places.

NIA officials said that the houses of five absconding declared criminals of banned organization PFI have been raided. Many documents and digital equipment have been recovered in it.

Ramalingam was killed in 2019
Ramalingam was murdered on 5 February 2019. A case was registered at Thiruvidaimaruthur police station in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu on 6 February and investigation was initiated. The NIA took over the investigation on 7 March 2019. The agency said that the motive behind Ramalingam’s murder was to promote enmity between religious communities and to take revenge. Because they were constantly opposing forced conversions. For this reason Ramalingam was killed. In the case, on August 2, 2021, the NIA arrested the absconding PFI member Rahman Shadiq in the case.

There was a reward of 5 lakhs on Rahman
After the arrest of Rahman Shadiq, the investigating agency had revealed that Rahman used to work for PFI in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. He had also recruited many members to get Ramalingam murdered. After getting the murder done, he was hiding in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh for many days. Then the NIA had announced a reward of five lakh rupees to the person giving information about Rahman. Along with this, he was declared wanted by the Special Court of NIA.

PFI banned for 5 years, government said – their activities pose a threat to security
The Central Government had banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) for 5 years on 28 September 2022. Apart from PFI, action was taken on 8 more organizations. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification banning these organizations. Terror link evidence has been found against all of them. The Central Government took this action under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). The government said, the activities of PFI and its affiliated organizations are a big threat to the security of the country.
