Haryana BJP president Nayab Singh Saini, who was unanimously elected as leader of the party’s state legislature group, was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Haryana on Tuesday in the presence of Governor Bandaru Dattatreya at the Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.

The BJP leader reached Raj Bhawan with former CM Manohar Lal Khattar to stake claim for forming the new government in the state. Saini was also accompanied by Union Minister Arjun Munda, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh and Haryana BJP in-charge Biplab Deb.

Saini, 54, is considered a confidante of former chief minister Khattar. The Kurukshetra MP hails from the OBC community and also served as the state president of Haryana BJP. He was appointed to the post in October 2023.

Saini began his political career with the BJP in 1996, when he started within the Haryana unit, working alongside the state general secretary until 2000. He became the district general secretary of the BJP Youth Wing in Ambala in 2002, followed by district president in Ambala in 2005.

Saini later became the state general secretary of the BJP Kisan Morcha in Haryana in 2009 and district president of Ambala BJP in 2012. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Narayangarh constituency in 2014.

Lok Sabha Elections

The surprise move by the ruling BJP comes ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The BJP had won all 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state in 2019.

The Haryana assembly polls are due in October. BJP’s Thanesar MLA Subhash Sudha and J P Dalal, who held the agriculture portfolio, told media that Saini was unanimously elected as the leader of the state BJP’s legislature party.
