The gazette was issued on Saturday evening by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. In which it is stated in the Gazette of Delhi issued by Joint Secretary Ashutosh Agnihotri to the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi that the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022, as amended by sub-section of section-3 of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Act, 1957 (5), the total number of seats in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is hereby determined to be two hundred and fifty (250).

Reserved seats on the basis of 2011 census

Further, in accordance with sub-section (6) (as amended) of section 3 of the aforesaid Act, the Central Government, the population of the Scheduled Castes is proportionate to the total population of Delhi (Census-2011) as per the total number of seats. The total number of seats reserved for the members of the Scheduled Castes in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in proportion to the number is also determined to be 42. The number of reserved seats in the corporation has been done on the basis of 2011 census. Earlier, a three-member commission was formed in July for delimitation in the municipal corporation.

The bill was approved on April 18

The three municipal bodies of Delhi – North Delhi Municipal Corporation, South Delhi Municipal Corporation, East Delhi Municipal Corporation merged into one municipal corporation on May 22, 2022 when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2022 came into force. The bill to unite the three municipal bodies was approved by the Lok Sabha on 30 March and by the Rajya Sabha on 5 April. The then President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the bill on 18 April. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi was bifurcated into South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) in 2011.
