In the Morbi bridge accident, the Gujarat High Court has ordered Oreva Group to pay Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh each to the injured. Hearing on the issue of interim compensation was held in the High Court for the third consecutive day on Wednesday. Family members of 120 deceased were also present in the court during the hearing. It may be noted that on October 30 last year, the suspension bridge built on the Machhu river in Morbi had collapsed. More than 135 people died in this accident.

The High Court had issued a notice to the group
The Gujarat High Court is hearing the matter. The High Court had last month issued notice to Ajanta Manufacturing Limited (Oreva Group), the company that maintains and operates the Morbi Suspension Bridge. The petitioner has sought that the company be made liable to pay for the damages caused by the accident. Ajanta Company had entered into an agreement with Devprakash Solutions for the repair of the bridge.

Compensation will have to be given within two weeks
Utkarsh Dave, the lawyer for the aggrieved side, said that today the hearing was held in the court for the third consecutive day regarding the compensation. In this context, the High Court has ordered Oreva Group to pay a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of each of the deceased. Out of this, give half the amount i.e. Rs 5 lakh within three days and the remaining Rs 5 lakh within two weeks.

Oreva Group had expressed its desire to compensate
Recently, in the Gujarat High Court, the owner of Oreva Group, Jaysukh expressed his desire to give compensation to the families of those killed. Patel told the court that he was saddened by the accident and wanted to pay compensation to the injured himself. On this, the court had said that he cannot escape from the allegations leveled against him.

The bridge fell only after 5 days of opening
This bridge broke down just 5 days after it was opened for the common people. About 500 people present on the bridge fell into the river. Of these, 134 have died so far. Women and more than 30 children are also included in the dead. 200 people who were holding the cable-netting of the bridge were saved.

Jaisukh’s family went to check fitness
Orewa got the contract for maintenance of Morbi Bridge for 15 years in March 2022. It sub-contracted the repairs to Devprakash Solutions. After completion of the work, on October 24, Jaysukh Patel, chairman of Oreva Group, and his family declared fit to open to the public after a single fitness test like walking on the bridge.

The sub-contract given to him was also technically incompetent.
The technical knowledge of the firm entrusted by Oreva to Dhrangadhra was insufficient to repair the bridge. It has also been told in the forensic report that the 4 cables of the bridge were very old. There was rust in them. Oiling-greasing of cables was also not done during repair. The wooden base of the bridge was replaced with four-layer aluminum sheets. This increased the weight of the bridge. The old cables could not handle this load and the bridge collapsed as the crowd increased.

More than 135 people died
The suspension bridge over the Machchu river in Morbi town had collapsed on October 30 last year. 135 people died in the accident. 40 children were also among the dead. The Oreva Group was operating the bridge under an agreement with Morbi Municipality. This bridge broke down just 5 days after it was opened for the common people.
