Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday introduced his newest family member to his social media followers. The new member is an energetic four-legged ‘surprise’ named ‘Noorie’ for his mother and veteran Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

The Congress leader adopted Noorie, a Jack Russell Terrier puppy, from Goa in August. At the time Noorie was three-month-old.

Sharing a video of Noorie’s adoption on World Animals’ Day on his YouTube Channel, Rahul said little Noorie has lit up their lives in the short span of time.

“I’d like you all to meet the newest and the cutest member of our family – our li’l pup, Noorie. She flew in from Goa straight into our arms, and has become the light of our lives. Unconditional love and uncompromising loyalty – there is so much this beautiful animal can teach us! We must pledge to protect and share our love with all living beings. #WorldAnimalDay,” the caption read.

Noorie was Rahul’s “little surprise” for his “Ma” Sonia. The video shows that after Rahul reached Delhi from Goa, he took Noorie to his mother’s house and asked her to have a look at the gift. “A little surprise for Ma,” he said.

A hesitant Sonia then came out of the house and opened the gift basket carrying Noorie. On seeing the dog, she instantly lit up and carried the dog on her lap.

“It’s a she?” Sonia asked Rahul, to which he replied, ‘Ya’. “She’s so cute,” she said thanking her son for the gift.

The video then showed Noorie’s antics at the Gandhi family residence as she played with Sonia and her other dog Lapo.

Rahul Gandhi adopted Noorie and another puppy from a dog kennel owned by Shivani Pitre and her husband Stanley Braganca, in North Goa’s Mapusa town, North Goa. He reportedly made the adoption a day before the Supreme Court stayed Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a 2019 defamation case in August.

Pitre told The Indian Express, “He (Rahul) took one puppy with him and another will be sent to him later.”
