Over 100 trucks of vegetables have arrived at the Market Yard from Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh in the last two days. With this additional supply, rates of vegetables have come down by 10-15% as compared to the last two weeks, they said.
Vilas Bhujbal, former president, Market Yard Traders’ Association, predicted a further decline in coming days. “Now, rates of all vegetables are down, like matar (green peas), usually Rs50-80 per kg in the wholesale market, is being sold at Rs25-30 per kg. A similar trend is observed in cauliflower, tomato, cucumber, and carrot rates,” added Bhujbal.
Vegetables are also coming from 13 tehsils of the district in large quantities in the last four-five days, said Market Yard officials. On Sunday alone, the Market Yard received 1.25 lakh bunches of coriander and 40,000 bunches of fenugreek. “Thus, rates of these two vegetables came down by Rs3-Rs5 in auction. Coriander was sold for Rs3 to Rs8, while a fenugreek was auctioned for Rs12-Rs16,” said officials.
Vendors and citizens claimed that rates of vegetables have also nosedived in retail markets across the city. “In areas such as Kothrud, Model Colony, Koregaon Park, among others, the vegetables usually sell at high prices. Citizens living in these localities often pay high rates as vendors charge high,” said another APMC official.
