BEGUSARAI: The indigenous visual art form of Bhagalpur-Manjusha painting-will be displayed at Rajpath during the Republic Day celebration in New Delhi, deputy collector Manish Kumar said here on Wednesday.
The 16-metre long art work is painted by Manoj Pandit and his disciple Aman Sagar. Manoj is considered an icon of the art form.
Giving details of his work, Manoj said it depicts Tilka Manjhi, Anand Mohan Sahay, Satish Chandra Jha, Mahendra Gope, Deep Narayan Singh as five of the illustrious son of the soils who made sacrifices during the freedom movement.”Tilka Manjhi is a martyr. It took us two days to vividly depict these veterans on a 324 square feet canvas. To paint, we used pink, green and yellow colours, which is typical of any Manjusha painting. The display of art work at Rajpath will be a proud moment for the state and a tribute to the state’s rich legacy of folk arts,” he said..
According to sources, the painting was prepared at an art workshop organised at Bhubaneshwar by the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, a wing of the Union ministry of culture in collaboration with Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Science (KISS) in December 2021. The workshop was a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ programme and intended to celebrate the heroics and struggles of the unsung freedom fighters of Indian national movement.
The Union ministry of defence was also a stakeholder in the workshop. It was at this workshop that the two ministries decided to make it a part of Republic Day celebrations. “Bhagalpur DM Subrat Kumar Sen as well as Resident Commissioner of Bihar Bhawan Palka Sahni played a major role in promoting the art form and selecting it for the workshop,” Manoj added.
“It took us 6 days to complete the work and we even worked during night hours. The art work will be framed to put on display. The ministry of culture has issued us certificate of appreciation with statement of it being to put on display at Rajpath,” Manoj said.
