New Delhi: In the light of murders leading to communal tension in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada, Mangaluru Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar ordered ban on men riding pillion in the Mangaluru police Commissionerate area at night, news agency PTI reported. According to the report, the ban that came into effect from Thursday, would remain in force till August 8. However, children below 18 years of age, elderly people, and women have been exempted from the restriction.
Apart from pillion riding, no person would be allowed to raise slogans in public, incite people, calling names, stage protests or display pictures and posters that can lead to communal flare-ups.
According to the PTI report, there would also be a ban on gatherings of more than five people at one place, and carrying any kind of weapons or shaft, bursting fire-crackers or burning effigies or hurling stones is strictly prohibited.

Mangaluru Police also restricted indulgence in any activities that could disturb communal harmony, peace and public order, as per the report. Also, any private function, celebrations and rallies have been banned during this period.
It is to be noted that the coastal district in the southern state witnessed three murders of Masood, Praveen Nettaru, and Fazil within a fortnight, sparking communal tension.

Notably, the murder of Nettaru, a BJP youth wing leader, triggered an outrage among the Hindu right wing members, who staged demonstrations and launched a social media drive against the BJP government in the southern state.
