On Sunday, 11 people died of poisonous gas in Ludhiana, Punjab. This poisonous gas came out from the gutter in front of Kariana store. Work continued in the area till late night to prevent the gas from spreading further.
Administration officials also reached the spot late in the night. Investigation revealed that the shop owner Sourav Goyal had opened it after the sewerage got jammed. Sourav, his wife and mother died due to the poisonous gas that came out, while the elder brother is admitted in the hospital.
Along with this, the entire family of Kavilash, who was running Aarti Clinic, succumbed to poisonous gas in this accident. The post-mortem of the dead bodies of the entire family has been done and handed over to the relatives. All the bodies have been taken to Gaya in Bihar.
The uncle of the deceased told that nephew Kavilash and his wife lived with the children on Sua Road in Gyaspura. Abhay (13), Aryan (10) and Kalpana (16) studied at the school, both the couple were doctors and ran Aarti Clinic.
The family was living in Punjab for 30 years
He was living in Punjab for the last 30 years. It was told that Dr. Kavilash had not yet opened the clinic during the incident yesterday. The whole family was sleeping. The family did not get a chance to recover. Poisonous gas made the entire family sleep dead.
The family continued to suffer insensibly. Whoever went for help fell down unconscious. By the time the police or the relief team reached the spot, the family had already died. The people around told that Dr. Kavilash was a very sociable person. Often used to participate in social works as well.
Factory accountant found unconscious along with wife
Ashwini Kumar, a resident of Hajipur in Bihar, told that his brother Navneet (39) and sister-in-law Neetu (37) died in the accident. Also, another brother Nitin has been admitted to the hospital. All were lying unconscious outside the house. He took them to the hospital, where the doctors declared the brother-in-law brought dead.
Apart from him, daughter Nandini was also in the house. Being on the roof, he was saved. Navneet was an accountant in Aarti Steel. While his brother is working in Nitin Tata Company, Bikaner.
H2S killed people
According to NDRF officials, investigation revealed that this gas is H2S (hydrogen sulphide). People have come in the grip of this gas. To reduce the effect of gas, caustic soda has been added to the sewerage. TPM level officials checked at the spot and found 200 which is quite fatal. After adding caustic soda, the reaction of the chemical has been reduced to a great extent.
For the time being, there is a need to keep the area sealed. The main reason for the family members of the two houses who have come under the grip of this gas has come to light that both those houses have sewerage manholes.
Wearing masks, the rescue team reached near the building where the gas leak was reported.
People fainted even in the houses around the building.
There is a densely populated area around the Kariana shop near which this incident took place on Sua Road in Gyaspura. Here, within a radius of 300 meters, many people were found lying unconscious in the streets and houses. The people of the nearby dhabas also fainted. The administration launched a search operation in the entire area with the help of drones. Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Sidhu, who reached the spot, said that all the people from the building where the incident took place have been evacuated.
Gas attack on brain
According to the officials who reached the spot after the accident, there was no sign of suffocation in the respiratory system of those who died. The cause of death could be neurotoxin (poison affecting the nervous system). People have died only after chemical reaction in sewerage manhole. The National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) teams checked the air quality throughout the night. Machines are continuously installed to check gas leakage.
