RANCHI: The news of the death of ace shooter from Dhanbad, Konika Worthy, has sent shock waves among the people, particularly the sports fraternity in Dhanbad. Worthy who shot into the limelight after Bollywood actor Sonu Sood gifted her a rifle to participate in the national trials, allegedly committed suicide in Kolkata.
Talking to TOI, the treasurer of the Jharkhand State Rifle Association, Rajnder Singh Virdi, said, “It is hard to believe that Layak who fought hard against the odds to carve a niche for herself would end her life suddenly. She was a talented player and had gone to Kolkata to hone her skills. She was about to return after completing her course, instead the news of her shocking demise came.”
Virdi said the incident has brought to light the immense pressure to perform that youngsters have to bear these days.
Social activist Ankit Rajgadhia said, “Several social organisations and eminent personalities of Dhanbad are demanding a high-level inquiry to ascertain under what circumstances Konika died.”
