“Such boat accidents are happening regularly, it is appalling. In 1924, a boat going from Kollam to Koyattam sank in Palna. Then Kerala lost its great poet Kumaranasan,” the court said.

Kerala Police formed SIT to investigate the accident
The Kerala Police has constituted a Special Investigation Team to probe the boat accident on Tuesday. State police chief Anil Kant has assigned Malappuram district police chief Sujit Das to lead the SIT.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident by tweeting. He tweeted- I am saddened by the death of people in the boat accident in Malappuram, Kerala. My condolences to the families of the deceased. The next of kin of each deceased will be given Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF. State Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased. Also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
