Kejriwal’s politics on SYL canal: AAP stuck between Punjab-Haryana, then ‘handed’ the issue to the Center; Politicians giving statements for electoral gains

Chandigarh34 minutes ago

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal’s statement on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal is in the news. There is a dispute going on between Punjab and Haryana regarding this canal. Kejriwal said in Haryana’s Hisar that there is water shortage in both the states. Center should solve it.

It is clear that on the issue of SYL, AAP is stuck in Punjab and Haryana. There are two reasons for this. First… If there is a government in Punjab, then we cannot talk about giving water. Second.. If you want to contest elections in Haryana, you cannot stop asking for water.

That is why the whole issue was handed over to the Centre. There is no electoral loss in both the states, so the leaders are definitely giving statements. In Haryana, AAP MP Sushil Gupta is making claims to bring water from SYL canal. In Punjab, Minister Kuldeep Dhaliwal is saying that leave water, not a single drop is to be given.

Has Punjab lost its command?
After the statement of Kejriwal and CM Bhagwant Mann, did the command of Punjab get out of hand on the issue of SYL canal?, this question is because till now Punjab has been strongly opposing it. During the government of Captain Amarinder Singh, all agreements were canceled against this canal by making Punjab Termination of Agreement Act-2004. Due to which Punjab refused to accept the agreement giving water to Haryana. After this, when the Akali government was formed, all the land was returned to the farmers. SYL canal has been filled. Now farmers are even cultivating on it.

SYL controversy going on since 1966
The SYL canal dispute has been going on since 1966. Then Punjab and Haryana were separated. After a 10-year long dispute, there was talk of building the SYL Canal in 1976, finalizing the sharing of water. The farmers of Punjab opposed this. The agreement was again signed in 1981. Former PM Indira Gandhi inaugurated SYL at Kapuri, Patiala. After this, instead of stopping, the dispute escalated. The commission was formed in 1985 but the issue was not resolved. In 1990, the terrorists killed the engineers of the SYL canal. After which the construction of SYL canal stopped.

Why has the issue come up for discussion now?
Hearing was held in the Supreme Court regarding the SYL canal. The Center said in the Supreme Court that Punjab is not cooperating. CM Bhagwant Mann did not respond to the letter sent for the meeting in April. The Supreme Court asked the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti to hold a meeting with Punjab and Haryana and submit its report in 4 weeks. Its next hearing is to be held on January 15.
