Jio Dominates 5G Download Speeds, Airtel Leads Uploads In ICC World Cup Stadiums: Opensignal

Reliance Jio has the fastest overall and 5G download speeds across all ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 stadiums, while Airtel enjoys the fastest upload speeds, said network analysis firm Opensignal on Thursday. The report published ahead of the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2023 also said Vodafone Idea (VI) leads in experience with over-the-top (OTT) voice services — mobile voice apps such as WhatsApp, Skype, and Facebook Messenger. 

According to the network analysis firm, Jio boasts impressive download speeds, with an average of 61.7Mbps, which is twice as fast as Airtel and 3.5 times faster than VI. Additionally, Jio’s 5G download speeds average 334.5Mbps, marking a 25.5 per cent increase over Airtel’s comparable results.

On the other hand, Airtel takes the lead in both overall and 5G upload speeds, averaging 6.6Mbps and 26.3Mbps, respectively, Opensignal data showed. Airtel’s overall upload speeds are 5.2 per cent higher than Jio, 13 pr cent higher than Vi, and a significant 6.1 times higher than Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). Moreover, in the realm of 5G, Airtel’s average upload speeds outpace Jio’s by 21.7 per cent.

“Likewise, Jio is also top for 5G Availability in ICC Cricket 2023 World Cup stadiums, with our Jio 5G users spending more than 50 per cent of their time with an active 5G signal — the proportion being 2.6 times greater compared to Airtel (20.7 per cent),” said the report authored by Senior Analyst at Opensignal Hardik Khatri. 

The International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2023 is set to start on October 5. The matches will be spread across 10 stadiums, from Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

According to data, Vodafone Idea (Vi) emerges as the leader in providing a superior quality experience for over-the-top (OTT) voice services like WhatsApp, Skype, and Facebook Messenger. VI secured the top spot with a score of 78.7 out of 100, surpassing Airtel by half a point and outscoring Jio by 1.2 points. In contrast, BSNL lags behind all private telecom operators with a score of 70.8 points.

On another front, Airtel takes the lead in live video streaming performance in 23 out of 40 cities analysed, establishing itself as the frontrunner. Airtel even outperforms its competitors in nine of these cities. In comparison, Jio leads in 22 cities, securing the top spot outright in nine of them.

The report also said users enjoy the top overall video live experience with VI in 15 cities, beating every major operator in two cities, namely Lucknow and Mumbai.

When it comes to live video streaming, Airtel’s 5G network provides the best experience in 36 out of 40 cities, surpassing Jio in 11 cities. Conversely, Jio outpaces Airtel in only four cities, Amritsar, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

The report noted that as witnessed during IPL 2023, when over 449 million smartphone users streamed the tournament online, live streaming holds immense significance for Indian consumers.
