Jamshedpur: 70 people including BJP leader arrested on charges of communal violence, protest over arrest of lawyer

Police have arrested three people, including a BJP leader, in connection with the violence that broke out in Jamshedpur over the alleged desecration of a religious flag. On Wednesday, the official said that Sudhanshu Ojha, vice-president of the BJP Jamshedpur Metropolitan Committee, was arrested by the police on Tuesday night.

70 people arrested

A total of 70 people, including BJP leaders Abhay Singh and Sudhanshu Ojha, have been arrested in connection with Sunday’s violence between two different communities in Shastri Nagar area, the official said. Police has also arrested Chandan Choubey, a lawyer practicing in Jamshedpur court, in connection with the violence.

Protesters have boycotted judicial work in a local court on Wednesday in protest against the arrest of a lawyer by the police. Ajit Ambasta, head of a committee of Jamshedpur Bar Association, said that we strongly oppose the arrest of Choubey. If action is not taken against the guilty police officers within 12 hours, we will continue our protest tomorrow as well. He said that we will meet the deputy commissioner and tell him about the treatment meted out to Choubey. The lawyers protested in the court premises and raised slogans against the administration.
