The iOS experience may undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of iOS 18.

While many consider new iOS updates to be lacking in features, Apple could alter its approach and introduce a big update with iOS 18.

The topic of iOS updates has consistently sparked debates, with many claiming that Apple tends to stick to a familiar formula, offering an experience that is—for the most part—akin to its predecessors with the addition of a few features.

However, this could change soon based on what Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported in a subscriber-only section of PowerOn. iOS 18, which will follow the current iOS 17 version, is expected to be a major overhaul. Gurman went on to say that he expects iOS 18 to be the “biggest” software update in iPhone’s history.

“I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates—if not the biggest—in the company’s history,” Gurman said.

For starters, the new iOS update is expected to double down on generative AI-powered use cases, with Siri getting a major makeover. In fact, The Information earlier reported that Apple could integrate a Large Language Model into Siri, and this, in turn, would make it capable of solving advanced tasks.

Apart from major AI-driven features, iOS 18, which is purportedly codenamed “crystal,” may have a lot more to offer, including a new auto-generate playlist in Apple Music and even the eventual implementation of RCS messaging.

Yes, RCS has been a long time coming to iPhones, and the Cupertino-based tech giant has already announced that RCS support would be coming to the iPhone in 2024. It could be possible that it is the iOS 18 version that brings support for the same as it launches alonsige the iPhone 16 series phones later this year.

With that being said, the scope of this update is expected to become evident at Apple’s WWDC 2024 event in June. Here, not only will we witness the release of the first developer beta, but Apple will also delve deep into the features, with a particular focus on AI this year.
