IndiGo announced on Thursday that it has removed fuel charges applicable on its domestic and international flights, effectively immediately. The airline earlier introduced fuel charges in October 2023, due to an increase in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices, an airline spokesperson said.
The airline revealed that as the government has slashed ATF prices recently, the airline has removed the ‘fuel charge’.
IndiGo further shared an official statement and stated, “As ATF prices are dynamic, we will continue to adjust our fares and components thereof, to respond to any change in prices or market conditions,” reported Mint.
Notably, the government slashed the Jet fuel prices by 4 per cent on the first day of the New Year. The ATF prices were reduced by Rs 4,162.5 to Rs 101,993.17 per kl, state-owned fuel retailers revealed via price notifications. This reduction marked the third consecutive monthly price cut.
Earlier, ATF prices were slashed by nearly 6 per cent or Rs 6,854.25 per kl in November and then by over 4 per cent or Rs 5,189.25 per kl in December. These three price cuts have erased nearly 45 per cent of the Rs 29,391.08 per kl rate increase effective in the four monthly tranches starting July 1 last year. Jet fuel makes up for 40 per cent of an airline’s operating cost. This reduction in the prices is expected to help reduced the financial burden of the airlines.

In other news, IndiGo received a show cause notice from the food safety regulator, FSSAI, on Wednesday, for serving unsafe food to a passenger. A spokesperson for the airline said that it has received a “show cause notice from FSSAI with regard to a food item served on flight 6E 6107 from Delhi to Mumbai. We will be responding to the notice, as per protocol”.
The incident took place onboard flight 6E 6107 from Delhi to Mumbai on December 29, 2023, when a passenger found a worm in the sandwich served to her and shared the video of the same on social media. The airline sought an apology following the event.
