On February 7, NDRF started the rescue operation in Turkey. In 10 days, the team rescued two girls and pulled out 85 bodies from the debris.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams that went from India for rescue in the earthquake that hit Turkey on February 6 have returned. These 3 teams with 152 members started the rescue operation on 7 February. During this, the lives of 2 girls were saved in 10 days and 85 dead bodies were removed from the debris.

The Prime Minister congratulated these teams which returned to the country on 20 February. There was also a reason, some of their female members had left their 18-month-old twins and went to perform duty, so no one got time to talk to the parents during the rescue. The situation was such that the team members did not even get a chance to take a bath for 10 days.

The Prime Minister met the team that returned after the rescue in Turkey in Delhi and congratulated them.

1. Passports made overnight
India had sent 152 NDRF personnel to the disaster zone within 48 hours of the earthquake. Officials said that only a few members had diplomatic passports to go abroad. NDRF Inspector General NS Bundela told that NDRF teams from Kolkata and Varanasi sent hundreds of documents through fax and email. The Passport and Visa Division of the Ministry of External Affairs processed these within minutes and issued passports overnight.

Second in command operations rank officer Rakesh Ranjan told that Turkey had given visa on arrival to our teams. The teams were deployed in Nurdagi and Hatay in Gaziantep.

Deputy Commandant Deepak told that while going to the rescue, I had a problem with one thing. I was a vegetarian. In Turkey, a man arranged vegetarian food everywhere for me, who had lost his wife and 3 children in the earthquake. He took care that wherever I am posted, I get vegetarian food. If he had any tomatoes or apples, he would sprinkle salt and spices on them and give them to me. He hugged me and called me brother, I can never forget this.

3. Female constable went on mission leaving behind 18-month-old twins
Constable Sushma Yadav (32 years) was one of the five women rescuers in the team who were sent for disaster combat operations abroad for the first time. For this, she had to leave her 18-month-old twins with her parents-in-law.

He said that not even once did the thought cross my mind that I should not go. I just thought if we don’t, then who will. For the first time, I was without children for so many days, but this did not deter me in the rescue operation.

He told that his team’s job was to keep the rescue team safe, healthy and fit, so that they can continue their mission without falling sick even in sub-zero temperatures.

4. Turkish people keep NDRF badges as souvenirs
Second in command rank officer VN Parashar, who led his team on the ground, said that the people there gave him military badges to be worn on police and army uniforms as a token of thanks and his team had NDRF India and NDRF logos. , Kept them as a memento of Indian friendship.

5. Language barrier broken, Google translated and said thank you in Hindi
Parashar told that he and the rest of the team members received many messages on WhatsApp, in which people had written thanks. People had sent thanks to him in Hindi after translating it from Google. He told that the local people did not know Hindi and English. The language we saw was of respect for humanity and India. I wish we could have saved more lives… But we have found love out there that cannot be easily earned.

6. It Was Difficult To Wait To Talk To The Parents
Sub-inspector Shivani Agarwal said that her going for the operation didn’t bother her parents, but it was difficult to wait to talk on the phone. He told that there is a difference of about 2.30 hours between India and Turkey. By the time I could call him after being free from the operation, it was already 11.30 in India. My parents used to pick up the call on the first ring itself, as if they were sitting holding the phone.

7. People in trouble talked about Shahrukh-Salman, said- love them very much
Many NDRF rescue team members told that many people talked to them about Indian films and film actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone. People posed for photographs with the rescuers. Said that if you ever meet these actors, tell them that the people of Turkey love them.

The rescue team found a local female volunteer who used to hum songs from Hindi films and also dance. There were many such things, due to which the rescue team and the people of Turkey mixed with each other.

8. Left all my belongings there, returned only with love
Sub-Inspector Bintu Bhoria told how none of the rescue workers could take a bath for the entire 10 days of the rescue operation. Another officer said that NDRF personals used to take sponge bath and urinate by digging pits.

NDRF officer Vipin Pratap Singh said that we made sure that we cleaned all the locations we stayed at. We have returned only with love and affection for the people of Turkey. We gave everything including our tents, food, personal clothes, warm clothes to the local people and Turkish rescue workers.
