NEW DELHI: Amid rising Covid-19 cases across the country, India began administering the “precaution dose” or the booster shot of Covid-19 vaccine in its high-risk population — frontline workers and senior citizens with comorbidities — on Monday.
Tamil Nadu capital Chennai was one of the first to report administering of the Covid-19 booster vaccine shot to its frontline workers and those above 60 years of age with comorbidities.
This will be in addition to 151.94 crore vaccine doses administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive, as per a government release on Monday morning.
An official said that more than one crore health and frontline workers, along with many citizens above 60 years of age who suffer from comorbidities, are eligible to receive the third or booster dose of the Covid vaccines.
The eligibility for the “precaution dose” requires the recipient to have completed nine months after the second dose. The health ministry had earlier said that Co-Win system will send reminder SMS to those eligible for availing the precaution dose.
On Sunday, the Indian Council of Medical Research had said that the third dose of Covaxin holds promise.
“Third dose of COVAXIN holds promise,” the ICMR had tweeted.

Meanwhile, India reported 1,79,723 new cases in the last 24 hours, taking the active caseload to 7,23,619.
The current recovery rate stands at 96.62% with 46,569 recoveries in the last 24 hours. Total recoveries stand at 3,45,00,172.
