Any game with Neal Maupay guarantees entertainment for all those in attendance. The Frenchman, who plays for Brentford currently, has made a name for himself with not just his goal-scoring exploits but his antics on the field as well, making him one who ruffles feathers with others quite often.
Maupay’s recent antics in Brentford’s game against Spurs got Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, who called him out after the North London side triumphed in a come-from-behind win against the Bees last night.
Upon Brentford taking the initial lead, Maupay celebrated the goal with Spurs’ James Maddison’s signature dart-throw gimmick. His reaction prompted a brief confrontation with Maddison himself, who had a brush with the Brentford striker on field.
But, then again, Maupay’s actions came to bite him in the back as Spurs rallied together in the second half and pulled off a stellar comeback with three goals to clinch the game 3-2, leaving Maddison to have the last laugh.
After the match when about Maupay’s actions giving his players any extra motivation, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou commented on the unnecessary ‘bravado’ on display and criticized Maupay for his braggadocious nature.
“I hope not because that’s exactly what I’m talking about. I’m not a fan of it, I don’t like the whole bravado, pushing people around. If you’re that brave about things, my players and their players, get into a UFC cage and I’ll see how brave they are,” exclaimed Postecoglou.
“We’re out there to play football. And that’s what I want our guys to do, focus on playing football. And they shouldn’t get motivated by things that aren’t really that important to us. Like I said, we got sucked in first half. Second half was much better.”
Spurs catapulted themselves back into the top four of the Premier League table with the win, edging out Unai Emery’s Aston Villa to on goal-difference to enter Champions League qualification.
After an injury-stricken run, which dismissed much of Spurs’ squad for a brief period, the North London side will be keen to retain the form they showcased in the beginning of the season as they aim to make a push for the PL title till the very end.
