Shocking figures of sex ratio at birth (SRB) have come to the fore in Himachal. According to a report by the Health Management Information System (HMIS) of the Union Health Ministry, the SRB in the state has dropped to 941 in 2021-22. Means only 941 daughters are born for every 1000 sons.

Himachal’s SRB is better than the national average of 934, but worse when compared to the 2011 census data. Himachal had 972 females per 1000 males in the 2011 census data, which reduced to 941 in 2021-22.

Health department needs to open its eyes

The report of HMIS is enough to open the eyes of the state health department and the state government. After the report, the possibility cannot be ruled out that daughters are being killed before birth in the state. This report is indicating that even today abortions are happening after sex determination!

Ensure strict compliance of PNDT Act: Bisht

NS Bisht, former professor of Himachal Pradesh University, told that the people of the state will also have to change their thinking towards daughters. He told that SRB is worse in the districts where literacy is more in Himachal, in rural areas where literacy is less. SRB is still good there today. The government should strictly implement the Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act 1994 in the state.

Situation worsens in Himachal as well as in northern states

As per the HMIS report, the sex ratio at birth (SRB) is not good in Himachal as well as in the northern states and union territories (UTs). Dadra Haveli and Daman and Diu is at the bottom with 889 SRB.

Mizoram has the best child sex ratio

Mizoram has the best SRB in the country with 994, Sikkim at second position with 981, Kerala at third position with SRB of 968, Andaman and Nicobar at fourth position with SRB of 963 and Chhattisgarh at fifth position with SRB of 960.
