New Delhi:

An appeal against the exoneration of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a 2002 Gujarat riots case by the wife of a Congress MP killed in the violence is “devoid of merits”, the Supreme Court said on Friday.

Upholding the clearance issued to the then Chief Minister of the state by a Special Investigation Team, the top court dismissed the petition filed by Zakia Jafri, wife of Ehsan Jafri, who was among the 68 people killed in what came to be known as the Gulbarg Society massacre.

The incident was one of the worst of the riots that began after a train coach carrying pilgrims was burnt in Godhra, killing 59 people, a day ago.
