The Ministry of Home Affairs has ordered the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the probe into the grisly murder of a Hindu shopkeeper in Rajasthan’s Udaipur.

The anti-terror agency will investigate the involvement of any extremist or terror outfits organisation and foreign conspiracies in the case.

A tailor, identified as Kanhaiya Lal, was murdered on Tuesday by two men who chopped his head off and later uploaded a video admitting to killing the man over a social media post in support of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

The two accused were arrested by police and the Rajasthan Police formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the matter. The Centre had dispatched a four-member NIA team to Udaipur soon after the incident.

“MHA has directed the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to take over the investigation of the brutal murder of Shri Kanhaiya Lal Teli committed at Udaipur, Rajasthan yesterday. The involvement of any organisation and international links will be thoroughly investigated,” the Home Minister’s Office said in a tweet today.

Meanwhile, Kanhaiya Lal’s killing triggered outrage and stray cases of violence in Udaipur, a part of which was placed under curfew. Prohibitory orders banning people from assembling were clamped across the state for a month and mobile internet services suspended for the next 24 hours.
