The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday passed a bill to replace the Governor with the state’s Education Minister as a visitor to all private universities. The bill was passed without voting as the opposition BJP refused to vote in the assembly. It is to be known that in the universities of the state, the bill to remove the governor from the post of chancellor and make the CM a chancellor has been passed in the assembly on June 13 itself.

CM was made chancellor instead of governor
A day earlier i.e. on June 13, the Bengal Assembly has passed a bill to replace the Governor with the Chief Minister as the Chancellor of State Universities. During the voting on this bill, 182 votes were in favor of the bill, while 40 votes were against it.

The BJP alleged that 16 more votes were against the bill. Since the total number of BJP MLAs is 56, the number of opposing votes cannot be 40. Shubhendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly has also threatened to take the matter to the court.

This is the situation in other states now.
In other states, there is a rule that the governor is the chancellor in government universities and the visitor in private universities.

Will have to take consent from the governor
Now these bills will have to get assent from Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar before becoming an Act. Earlier, state education minister Bratya Basu had said that if the governor refuses to assent to the bills, the government will pass an ordinance to enforce the laws.

news of dispute with dhankhar

A few days ago, there were reports of a dispute between the governor and the state government in Bengal over the appointment of vice-chancellors in universities. Recently, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar was also accused of appointing several Vice Chancellors without the consent of the State Government, after which this big exercise has taken place to reduce the power of the Governor. Dhankhar had earlier alleged that vice-chancellors of 24 universities were illegally appointed without the approval of the chancellor.
