On July 14, the government implemented a plan to reduce the rising prices of tomatoes.

To provide relief to the common people, the central government will sell tomatoes at Rs 70 per kg from tomorrow i.e. Thursday. The Department of Consumer Affairs (DOCA) has directed the National Cooperative Consumer Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NCCF) to sell tomatoes at a retail price of ₹70/kg from July 20.

On July 14, the government implemented a plan to reduce the rising prices of tomatoes. Under this plan, NCCF and NAFED started selling tomatoes at the rate of Rs 90 per kg. After this, the government reduced the price of tomatoes by Rs 10 per kg to Rs 80 on July 16. At the same time, now once again the price of tomato has been reduced.

NAFED-NCCF procured 391 MT of tomatoes till 10th July
After the order of the government, both the agencies started selling tomatoes at a lower price by buying them at the rate of 120-130 per kg. Till July 10, NAFED and NCCF had procured a total of 391 metric tonnes of tomatoes. These tomatoes are being sold through major centers in Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. NCCF Managing Director Anees Joseph had told that the central government will bear the loss due to this.

Southern and Western regions contribute about 60% of the total production.
Tomato is produced in almost every state. Whereas the southern and western regions contribute about 60% to the total production of the country. The surplus production in these regions is used to ensure a continuous supply of tomatoes to other parts of India.

In the last 3 years also the trend of increasing the prices of tomatoes in the rain
In the last three years also, the trend of increase in the prices of tomatoes has been shown in the rainy season. Last year i.e. in June of 2022, the price of tomatoes had reached Rs 60-70 per kg. Earlier in 2021 the price had reached Rs 100 and in 2020 the price had reached close to Rs 70-80 per kg.

India is the largest tomato producing country after China
According to the National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation, India is the second largest producer of tomatoes in the world after China. It produces about 20 million tonnes of tomato from an area of ​​about 7.89 lakh hectares with an average yield of about 25.05 tonnes per hectare. China is on top with a production of 56 million tonnes.

In the year 2021-22, more than 20 million tonnes of tomatoes were produced in India. Mainly two types of tomatoes are grown here. Hybrid and Local. Madhya Pradesh is the largest tomato producing state in the country. It is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and Gujarat in the maximum tomato growing states.
