Government Issues Advisory: Tech Companies Must Seek Permission Before Launching AI Products, Even for Trials

Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, emphasized the necessity of implementing strict regulations, especially concerning technologies like AI, as there is no oversight body for such technologies.

He stated that they are moving towards a system where launching any product would require rigorous scrutiny beforehand. The Central Minister mentioned that even if an AI model is labelled as ‘under-testing,’ it would still require government approval before being introduced to the market.

The advisory was issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology following alleged biased responses from Google’s AI tool, GEMINI, to questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This incident sparked a heated debate regarding the programming of GEMINI, prompting the issuance of the advisory by the Ministry.
