NCLAT has directed Google to deposit 10 per cent of the fine of Rs 1,337.76 crore imposed by CCI. The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has agreed to hear Google’s plea challenging CCI’s penalty of Rs 1337 crore for alleged violations in the Android mobile device ecosystem. The tribunal has issued notice to CCI seeking response on Google’s plea. NCLAT accepting the petition asked Google to deposit 10% of the fine to show bonafide. Meanwhile, the tribunal refused to stay the CCI’s penalty order on Google.

This direction of NCLAT has come on that petition filed by Google. The CCI’s order was challenged on allegations of Google abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem. That order said the decision was a blow to Indian users and would make such devices more expensive in the country. On October 20 last year, the CCI imposed a fine of Rs 1,337.76 crore on Google for anti-competitive practices with respect to Android mobile devices. In the October verdict, the CCI had also ordered the internet company to desist from various unfair business practices. Google challenged this before the NCLAT, which is an appellate authority against any direction or decision or order passed by the regulator. Google in its petition had sought an interim stay on the fine.
