gmda: Gmda Shelves Its Plan To Build Stadium In Sector 9 | Gurgaon News – Times of India

GURUGRAM: The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has scrapped the proposal to construct a new sports stadium that was initially planned at Begampur Khatola and later at Sector 9. The project had been announced by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar in April 2016.
According to officials, although the plan was finally dropped during the ninth authority meet of the GMDA, which was held last month, seeds of doubt had already been sown at the preceding meeting in April last year.
“During the GMDA meeting in April, it had been pointed out that there may be no need for constructing an additional stadium in the city since the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is already constructing a stadium at Wazirabad. Furthermore, the city already has a stadium in the form of Tau Devi Lal Sports complex as well as several private sports institutions and all of these, together, may suffice for residents,” said a senior GMDA official.
During the last authority meeting in December, Chief Executive Officer Sudhir Rajpal had stated that the need for the additional stadium was, hence, examined once again and, considering the fact that the MCG is already constructing a stadium at Wazirabad, it had been decided to drop the proposal.
It was in April 2016 that Khattar had announced that a sports stadium would be constructed at Begumpur Khatola. However, due to non-availability of land at the location, in September 2018 he announced that the stadium would be constructed in Sector 9, instead. In August 2019, this proposal was transferred to the GMDA.
At present, the only government facilities in Gurugram available to athletes are the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex and the Nehru Stadium. While the former houses two international sports stadiums for cricket and football, along with a volleyball and basketball court, the latter is primarily used as a hockey stadium.
At the same meeting of the GMDA where officials revealed that they had dropped the proposal to construct the additional stadium, a proposal to construct a sports stadium at Farrukhnagar was approved.
