As the seventh and final season of Young Sheldon approaches, fans of the show are preparing for a significant moment in the show. The series, which explores the early life of Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, has always hinted at the eventual passing of Sheldon’s father, George Sr. According to the maker of Young Sheldon, a spin-off prequel to The Big Bang Theory, one of the most pivotal moments in Sheldon’s life was the death of his father when he was a teenager, and this event is set to take place in Season 7.

In an interview with TVLine, executive producer Steve Holland confirmed that the passing of Sheldon’s father will be addressed in the final season. While not revealing specific details, Holland claims that the show aims to stay true to the larger storylines and events that shape Sheldon’s life, even if it means not adhering to every joke or detail from The Big Bang Theory.

“I don’t want to say what you will or won’t see, but things will get addressed,” Holland explained. “We are not beholden to every joke that was ever made on The Big Bang Theory, but we do feel beholden to the larger canon and the larger events that shape Sheldon’s life. We want to honor those,” he added.

He further said that Young Sheldon has always existed within the same timeline as The Big Bang Theory, despite having a different tone. The passing of George Sr. is a crucial part of Sheldon’s backstory and will not be ignored or avoided in Young Sheldon.

“That is a thing that happens in Sheldon’s life. This is the same character (from The Big Bang Theory). We are living in the same universe as The Big Bang Theory and that sort of world-building is important. Big things that (Adult Sheldon said) happened in his life without a doubt happened,” Holland mentioned.

Apart from Holland, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach also talked about the series and praised it for its unique storytelling and remarkable cast, stating that the show has successfully captured the essence of the Cooper family and their heartfelt stories.

“As a prequel to one of the biggest comedies, Young Sheldon proved lightning can strike twice,” Reisenbach said, as reported by Comicbook. She further expressed gratitude to the executive producers and the entire team for their work over six seasons and looks forward to the final season’s conclusion.

“Being able to tell the origin of Sheldon Cooper, and expanding the story to include the entire Cooper family has been a wonderful experience,” said executive producers Steve Holland, Steven Molaro, and Chuck Lorre. “We are grateful to our fans for embracing this chapter of the Coopers these past six seasons, and on behalf of the entire Young Sheldon family, we’re excited to share this final season with you,” they added.

The Season premiere of Young Sheldon is tentatively scheduled for February 15.
