Garud commandos of IAF deployed on China border: Special force equipped with weapons like Sig Sauer from Ladakh to Arunachal

The Garuda Force was formed by the IAF three years after the 2001 attack on the Awantipora fighter base.

Garud commandos, who have proved their mettle in counter-terrorism operations and airbase security in the Kashmir Valley, are deployed on the LAC. The Garuda Special Force of the Indian Air Force has been deployed at high altitudes along the China border since May 2020 for special operations.

Garuda Force is equipped with American Sig Sauer
The Indian Air Force has also equipped its special forces with weapons such as the American Sig Sauer assault rifle. They have Galil sniper rifles, Israeli Tver rifles and their many variants as well as Negev Light Machine Guns which can take down enemy soldiers from a range of 800 to 1000 metres.

Apart from this, AK-103 has also been given to Garuda commandos, whose latest version AK-203 will be made in India under the Make in India scheme.

Garud commandos play a special role in terrorist attack, emergency response force, anti-hijacking, hostage rescue, civil aid in natural calamities, combat search, reconnaissance and air assault.

Blood Hajin’s operation is famous
The Garud commandos had carried out the Rakta Hajin operation in Jammu and Kashmir. For this, the force used the Negev LMG. During this, five terrorists were killed by the Garuda team. Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala has been posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for this operation.

Women will also become Garud commandos
Now women can also join IAF’s Garud force. However, an official decision has not come on this. An army official said the decision was taken last year to promote gender equality, provided women can meet all training criteria. Till now there are only male commandos in this force.
