In Punjab, senior Akali Dal leader Charanjit Singh Atwal has said goodbye to the party. Atwal resigned from SAD membership on Wednesday. He left the Akali Dal in support of his son Indra Iqbal. He has been a former Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha and Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. His son had joined BJP 10 days ago. After this BJP has given him ticket for Jalandhar Lok Sabha by-election.

It is being told that Inder Atwal has joined BJP only because of the neglect of the Badal family. The Atwal family, which had been closely associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal since independence, was thrown into the party. Due to which former speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal was running angry with the Badal family for many years.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded Inder Iqbal, son of Charanjit Atwal, as its candidate for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll. It may be mentioned that Atwal had lost to the Congress candidate from Jalandhar by a very narrow margin in the last Lok Sabha elections. While he reached the Lok Sabha by defeating Santokh Chowdhary with a huge margin. Charanjit Singh Atwal, the only tall Dalit leader of SAD, has been the deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha.
