Forced eviction of hawkers in Shyambazar, mayor orders investigation after receiving complaint

A woman hawker was allegedly forcibly evicted. Kolkata Municipal Mayor Firhad Hakim ordered an investigation after receiving such a complaint from the woman. The woman has been hawking in Shyambazar area for a long time. But, recently, a miscreant allegedly evicted him from there by threatening him. The woman made such a complaint at the Talk to Mayor program on Friday. After receiving that complaint, he ordered an investigation. He appealed to the mayor to return the place to him.

The woman complained that her husband had been harassing her for a long time in the Hatibagan-Shyambazar area. After her husband’s death, she started hawking. But recently that place was illegally sold by a miscreant to another hawker for one and a half lakh rupees. He complained about this to the police. But he told the mayor that no action was taken by the police.

The mayor asked senior municipal officials to visit the spot to conduct a survey and investigate the allegations. He said, ‘I cannot accept the fact that hawker spaces are being sold like this in some areas. If the woman’s allegations are true, both the buyer and the seller should be arrested. I have asked the police to look into the matter. It is a crime. Action should be taken against it. The interests of economically weaker hawkers must be protected.’

Incidentally, hawkers sell all their products by placing items on branches. A municipal official said that the police will be warned about illegal eviction of hawkers in areas like Gariahat, New Market, Hatibagan. If necessary, the municipality will conduct joint raids before issuing identity cards to hawkers. Incidentally, the Kolkata Municipality had earlier announced that all hawkers who had applied for identity cards before 2017 would be given identity cards. That’s how the survey started. Then out of 5 thousand hawkers only 19 hawkers were found eligible for vending certificate. As a result, Kolkata Municipality will give identity cards to these 19 hawkers. A municipal official said that only a few hawkers are given identity cards because most of the hawkers do not obey the rules. Such a decision has been taken to convey that message.
