Food Items To Avoid If You Are Suffering From Amyloidosis

New Delhi: Amyloidosis is a disease in which amyloid proteins accumulate on organs such as the heart, kidney, and liver and cause damage to them. Some forms of amyloidosis coexist with other disorders and it may improve as other disorders are treated, while some other forms can result in life-threatening organ failure.

Chemotherapy and potent cancer-fighting medications may be utilised as treatments. Other drugs can minimise amyloid formation and regulate symptoms, while some people may benefit from organ or stem cell transplants. However, eating a nutritious and balanced diet can help people suffering from amyloidosis feel their best and avoid certain complications, while there are some food items that one must avoid.

Here are some food items that one must avoid if they are suffering from amyloidosis:

1. Limit Your Sodium Intake:

When you have Amyloidosis, you should limit your sodium intake to no more than 2300 mg per day (certain disease conditions like heart failure and kidney disease may recommend 1500 mg of sodium or less per day). Try to choose fresh, frozen, or canned fruits and vegetables with no added salt. Avoid processed meals, salt shakers, spice blends, and soup bases that contain salt.

2. Limit Your Sugar Intake:

Limit added sugar to 10% of your daily calorie intake and be wary of beverages such as soda, coffee with added syrups, and sugary juices. Water flavoured with lemon or other fresh or frozen fruit is a better option. Breakfast cereals and bars, sweets, high-fat milk and yoghurt, desserts, and sweet snacks all contain added sugars, so try to avoid these fruits. Fresh or canned fruit can be used to fulfil your sweet taste while also providing your body with critical vitamins, minerals, and fibre.

3. Reduce The Consumption Of Saturated Fats:

Limit saturated fat to 10% of total daily calories. Saturated fat is found in fried dishes, high-fat meats, whole-fat dairy, ice cream, coconut or palm oils, and butter. When feasible, avoid these and replace them with a healthy fat. When baking or roasting items, choose lean cuts of meat and remove the skin, replacing the butter, coconut, or palm oil with olive, canola, sunflower, safflower, or soybean oil.

4. Limit The Consumption Of Meats And Processed Foods:

Reduce your consumption of meats, especially red meats. To increase health and disease resistance, limit or avoid processed foods. In general, processed foods contain chemicals and additives that promote amyloid protein development in the body.
