The main objective of the Anti-Conversion Law
Yesvantpur Police has registered a case under Section 5 of the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act. Anti-Conversion Law specifically seeks to prevent “unfair conversion from one religion to another by misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, inducement or any fraudulent means”.

The anti-conversion law, which came into effect from September 30, was passed in the Assembly in December 2021 but was not introduced in the Legislative Council where the BJP lacked the necessary strength. An ordinance was issued in May 2022 to implement the anti-conversion law. In September last month, the bill was re-introduced in the monsoon session of the legislature, in which the BJP got a clear majority of 41 members in the 75-member council. After which it was implemented.

Under this law, any victim, his parents, siblings or anyone else who is in blood relation, marital or adopted relation can make a complaint against conversion. Whoever contravenes the provisions of section 3 shall be punished with imprisonment in accordance with the law.
