Ex-Manipur Guv La Ganesan Takes Oath As Nagaland’s New Governor Ahead Of Polls

New Delhi: La Ganesan took oath as the Nagaland governor on Monday. He succeeded Prof Jagdish Mukhi, the Governor of Assam, who was holding additional charge of Nagaland from September 2021 to February 14 this year.

He becomes the 21st governor of the poll-bound northeastern state. Ganesan was earlier the governor of Manipur since August 2021 and held additional charge of West Bengal from July to November 2022.

According to news agency PTI. he was administered the oath by Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Songkhupchung Serto at the Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, cabinet ministers, Director General of Police Lokayukta Banuo Z. Jamir, senior bureaucrats and officers of the state.

The President recently appointed governors for 12 states and new Lt. Governor for Ladakh, a Union Territory. An official statement on February 12 by the President’s Secretariat informed about the same.

The assembly election in Nagaland is slated to be held on February 27.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will reach poll-bound Nagaland on Monday on a two-day visit.

BJP candidate from the Mon constituency, Cheong Konyak said that Shah is scheduled to meet leaders of civil society organisations on Tuesday, besides members of organisations demanding a separate ‘Eastern Nagaland’.

The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO), which has been demanding a separate state of Frontier Nagaland comprising the six districts of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Shamatore and Noklak, had initially called for a boycott of the polls as their demand was not met.

They later withdrew the call following an appeal by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Nagaland will go to polls on February 27, while the votes will be counted on March 2.
