Eviction drive in Chennai’s Injambakkam: Five arrested for selling govt land | Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: In a twist to the continuing protest of residents of on the East Coast Road against evection, the Neelankarai police on Friday arrested five men for illegally selling government land to the public. Inquiries revealed that at least 30 people were involved in encroaching government property which they subsequently sold.
The arrested have been identified as D Rajendran, 56, of Muneeswaran Koil Street in Injambakkam, S Kanniappan, 56, of Muneeswaran Koil Street in Injambakkam, M Cholan, 47, of Ponniamman Koil Street in Injambakkam, G Venkatesan, 60, of Ponniamman Koil Street in Injambakkam and S Haridoss, 57, of Thanthai Periyar Nagar in Injambakkam.
Based on the complaint of the Sholinganallur tahsildar Manisekar, the Neelankarai police registered a case and arrested five men. The police sent them to jail after producing them in a magistrate court.
An investigation officer said, “We are searching for a few more people involved in the racket. Many people had paid them money and got the plots registered in their names illegally.”
Following the Madras high court order, the revenue officials began retrieval of 164 acres of wetland where more than 5,000 residents are staying. On January 24, the first bench of the Madras high court comprising Acting Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice P D Audikesavalu censured the revenue and district administration for failing to remove the encroachments and warned officials that they would be punished for wilful disobedience of its order.
