A unique case has come to light in Pali district. The people of the society became so angry with the marriage of mechanical engineer Amrit Suthar of Chanchodi village that they threw the groom’s family out of the society. The special thing is that it was neither a love marriage, nor a matter of marriage in the same gotra. It was not even that the girl’s family members were against the marriage. The Panchas did not like the groom’s turban and beard, for which they ostracized the groom and his family as a punishment.

A condition has been placed in front of the bridegroom that he should call a meeting of Panchs in two months. In the meeting, either the bridegroom should apologize or he should accept the instructions given by the panch. The groom refused to call the meeting, so now pressure is being created from his in-laws to the people of the village not to have any relation with him.

The groom Amrit also complained about this to the police, but no hearing is taking place. Amrit is not able to understand what to do? Because he does not want to bow down before this order of the Panchs. If he fights with them, neither his wife will be able to come back to his family, nor will his sister be able to maintain relations with his house. Despite all this, Amrit is determined to continue his fight against the contractors of the society.

Bhaskar team talked to Amrit and tried to know what was the reason, due to which he and his family were thrown out of the society by the punches.

society thrown out after 15 days of marriage

‘Pooja and I got married on 22nd April. My wife Pooja Solanki is a resident of Bali in Pali district. Pooja has done BSc in IT and is a web developer in the IT department of L&T Company in Pune. I also work in Pune. We invited around 1200 to 1300 people for the wedding. The people of the society were also involved in this. Got married with pomp.

Everything went well for about fifteen days. It was on 5-6 May, when I came to know that the Panchas had ostracized my family from the society. I wore a cream colored turban for the wedding and had a slightly grown beard. The panchs were annoyed by the same thing. The panchs said that why did I not wear saffron turban and cut my beard according to their rules? I could not believe that our family was ostracized for such a small thing. All these five people were present at the time of marriage, then no one said anything. Now my family has been told that we should call a panchayat of the society in two months, the further decision will be taken in that.

Amrit complained about the matter to the police through a tweet.

‘In the meeting the whole community is asked to have a feast’

‘I refused to call the meeting of the Panchs. I knew that in the panchayat either we would be asked to apologize or be fined or the whole community would be asked to have a feast. After refusing to call the meeting, we came to Pune. My brother also went to Hyderabad and I called my mother to myself.

‘ This thing became even more exasperating to the Panchs. They started threatening the people of the society in our village from behind that if anyone keeps relation with us, he will also be thrown out of the society. Not only this, in my in-laws Rani also told the society that if anyone keeps a relation with my father-in-law’s family, he will be thrown out.

Complaint to Collector-SP, but no hearing

‘After this we started getting calls from relatives and people of the society. They started pressurizing us to obey the Panchs. My brothers were called again and again from Hyderabad. I was also asked to come. On June 13, I informed the Pali Collector, SP and CMO by tweeting about the entire matter, but no hearing took place.

Meanwhile, the Panchs called a meeting of Panchs of the entire Godwad on 19th June. There were also cases of other families who had been ostracized by the society but were taken back. We were also called in this panchayat, but no one went from our side. In such a situation, we were boycotted.

‘Now these Panchs are pressurizing the people of the society in my village and in-laws’ house. They are calling us everyday to apologise. We have become so upset that we have forgotten all the happiness of marriage. Even my mother-in-law had to be taken to the hospital. My mother’s health has also started deteriorating.

my wife will not be able to go

‘Me and my brothers have now been called to the village. Everyone is pressurizing us to compromise. If we don’t do this, my father-in-law will never be able to invite his daughter to his house, because he will have to break ties with us to live in the society. Similarly, my sister will never be able to come to our place, but in spite of all this, I will continue my fight.’

‘My whole family is under stress after marriage. No one from our family lives in the village. Everyone stays outside in connection with work. Yes, mother definitely lives in the village, but she also keeps coming to visit us. Now we are getting calls daily from the people of the village that we should either listen to the Panchs or they will not keep relations with us. In future, if there is any program in our place, then no one from the society will come. The pressure is being put so much that we are not able to understand what to do.

Cancellation of marriage registration and asked for money back

When the society excommunicated Amrit Suthar’s family, he spoke to the president of the society and asked to return the amount of Rs 501 taken in the name of marriage registration in the society. Also asked to cancel the registration. Amrit told that he did not get any answer to this. In the report sent online to the Bali police station, he has accused 30-35 people, including Heeralal, president of Shri Vishwakarma Vansh Suthar Samaj, of harassing him.

President said – It is the duty of the society to follow the customs

The complaint made by Amrit Suthar is false. I didn’t even know him and didn’t attend his wedding. Like every society, our society also has some customs and rituals, which it is the duty of the society to follow. Amrutlal has insulted the Sewa Sansthan by giving it the status of Khap Panchayat.
