Udhagamanadalam: Compliance Madras High Court Field Director of Order, Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) Kaushal on Wednesday issued an order setting up an eight-member committee to decide on the tusker, ‘Rivaldo’, which is slated to be held on May 5 at ‘Karal’ near Vazathiottam.
The eight-member committee includes Dr. S. Manoharan, former Additional Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry, Ooty, TANUVAS, a veterinary scientist from Namakkal, a representative of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Nilgiris Chapter, Boominathon. , Landscape Coordinator, WWF, Kalidasan, Osai Environment Organization, B Ramakrishnan, Assistant Professor, Wildlife Biology, Ooty Government College of Arts and an NGO nominated by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
None of these forest officer is part of the committee.
The Madras High Court had ruled that the captured elephant should eventually be released back into the wild for providing medical treatment and the forest department should not keep it in permanent captivity.
“The elephant is being provided with a special diet and oral medicine at the kraal. In order to make decisions about further course of action regarding its treatment, or release in wild or semi-wild conditions, holistic, multidisciplinary, independent expert advice is essential. Hence the committee has been formed,” said Kaushal.
The Committee is requested to submit its report at the earliest within three weeks from the date of issue of this order. The trunk of 35-year-old Rivaldo was amputated in 2012 in an undisclosed incident.
