The groundwater level in India during the monsoon has increased significantly as compared to the past several years. 437.6 billion cubic meters of ground water has been recharged across the country. Of this, 239.16 billion cubic meters (61%) of water has also been removed from the ground for irrigation, drinking water and industrial use. This has been revealed in the Dynamic Ground Water Resource Assessment of India-2022 report.

The status of groundwater recharge increased in 2004, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017 and 2020. But, if we leave out 2013, this year has seen the highest groundwater recharge. However, there has been no significant improvement in the situation in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Western Uttar Pradesh. These states are still kept in the critical category.

In coastal states and some parts of the Northeast, water is only two meters deep.
Due to good rains, water is now getting 5 to 10 meters below in most areas of 12 states. These states are Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Karnataka. This depth is only 2 meters in the coastal states and some areas of the Northeast.

Worry also… In some areas of Rajasthan, Gujarat, the water level is 4 m. decrease
The water level has gone down by 4 meters in some areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The groundwater level in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh is the lowest compared to other parts of the country. This depth is 5 to 20 meters from the ground surface.

The groundwater level in Khara in Jodhpur district has gone down to 130.77 meters from the ground surface. The Central Ground Water Board monitors groundwater through 23,209 monitoring wells across the country. The data is collected four times a year. In November-2021, 54.8% of the monitored wells had raised groundwater levels as compared to November-2019.

Water level improved in these states last year
In Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, the water level rose last year. This time the water level has improved in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra etc.

The situation worsened because more water was extracted than it had accumulated.
Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan are among the states that draw more than the annual water recharged into groundwater. Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Chandigarh also exploit 60 to 100% of groundwater. Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, all the northeastern and rest of the southern states draw 60% less groundwater for various purposes than the annual recharge. This is considered the ideal situation. That is, 40% of the water is stored inside the earth.
