Doctor Strange 2 Official Trailer Reveals ‘Evil Strange’, A New Enemy, ‘What If’ Link & More

New Delhi: Marvel Studios just released the official teaser trailer for the Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, which is a sequel to Doctor Strange (2016). The movie is directed by Sam Raimi, who had directed the Tobey Maguire-starrer Spider-Man trilogy.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, also called Doctor Strange 2, marks Raimi’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The official trailer for Doctor Strange 2 uses a lot of dark themes and horror elements. This could be the first horror movie in the MCU. The trailer has a lot of hidden details, and Easter eggs. We break all of them down for you.

Wong Warns Doctor Strange

The trailer begins with Wong telling Doctor Strange, “Don’t cast that spell. It’s too dangerous.” Wong’s voice can only be heard in the background, and the screen transitions from pitch black to candles flickering on an altar. Surprisingly, this dialogue was heard only in the Spider-Man No Way Home trailer and not in the movie. This means Wong may have been talking to a Doctor Strange from a different universe.

Then, Doctor Strange asks ‘Why?’. And we hear him say, “We tampered with the stability of spacetime. The Multiverse is a concept about which we know frighteningly little.” The Multiverse refers to other planes of realities, universes or timelines, which do not obey the same laws of physics.

Baron Mordo, Strange’s mentor in Doctor Strange, was angry because Strange had used time as a weapon. Mordo parted ways with Strange and Wong and said, “The bill comes due.”

Broken Watch

The trailer shows a broken watch, with Strange’s reflection on it. This is the watch which Strange’s ex-girlfriend, Dr Christine Palmer, had gifted him. It was damaged when Strange had an accident, but he kept the watch even after becoming a Master of the Mystic Arts. The broken watch with Strange’s reflection on it is a metaphor for the fact that Doctor Strange himself was broken, his hands were damaged, and that his actions had broken time or reality.

Then, we hear Mordo: “Your desecration of reality will not go unpunished.” Mordo is telling Strange that the latter will have to pay for his actions which led to the collapse of reality.

Similarities To What If

We see New York collapsing, and this is similar to a scene from What If Episode 4, in which Strange Supreme was shown. He was an alternate version of the original Doctor Strange, and had lost his girlfriend Palmer in a car crash, after which he became a Master of the Mystic Arts after that.

He became evil and started absorbing different interdimensional beings to become powerful enough to alter the past and resurrect his love. He had even absorbed a creature with tentacles, which could either be Shuma-Gorath or Gargantos. In the end, he does succeed in resurrecting her, but this created a paradox which caused his entire reality to dissipate. There is a possibility that Mordo is speaking to Strange Supreme about the desecration of reality.

Then, we hear Doctor Strange saying, “It was the only way.” This was his dialogue from Infinity War after he gave away the Time Stone to Thanos.

The trailer cuts to a scene where Doctor Strange is walking up the stairs in the Sanctum Sanctorum, which filled with water, and could be from another reality.

America Chavez Enters MCU

A number of quick shots appear. Wanda is seen wielding Chaos Magic, Christine Palmer is walking down the aisle. However, she is not going to marry Doctor Strange.

In one of the most important scenes, we see a girl wearing a jacket with a Star symbol at the back. She is America Chavez, whose power is that she can open star portals to different dimensions. She has travelled to the MCU from another reality, and Strange will probably seek her help.

Strange Seeks Wanda’s Help

Then, Strange goes to visit Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, in a location which appears to similar to where she was living at the end of WandaVision. The place is probably the Wundagore Moutain from the comics, and has an orchard of white flowers, which represent peace. He had come to seek her help to fix the Multiverse. Wanda is a Nexus being which means she has the ability to affect probability and thus, the future. At the end of WandaVision, Wanda had adopted the Scarlet Witch persona, and was studying the Dark Hold, a forbidden book, in her astral projection form. Wanda may have learnt how to use dark magic from the book, and was searching through the multiverse for her children. She is probably the main villain in the movie, and can even go against Doctor Strange.

Strange In The Utopian Parallel

Doctor Strange is seen coming out of a door which is floating in another reality. The place is the Utopian Parallel, the home of America Chavez. The Utopian Parallel acts as a gateway to other universes, and exists out of time, parallel to all other dimensions of the multiverse. As Strange looks outside the door, we can see Wanda and Chavez behind him.

Then, we hear Mordo say, “I am sorry, Stephen.” Mordo was hunting for sorcerers at the end of the Doctor Strange movie. The one shown in this movie could be from another reality, and may be seen helping Doctor Strange.

Darkness and clouds can be seen surrounding Kamartaj. This could be Alioth, which is a trans-temporal entity engulfs variants from the multiverse.

Scarlet Witch Performs A Seance

In the most interesting scene in the trailer, Wanda, in her Scarlet Witch form, is seen performing a seance on an altar. This scene proves that the movie belongs to the horror genre.

Gargantos Attacks Strange

Then, we see Strange unleashing tentacles from his hands, and this could be Strange Supreme, who is trying to attack the original Doctor Strange. After this, we see Gargantos, which is an interdimensional villain, and an enemy of Namor, the Sub-Mariner of Atlantis. Namor was also a part of Illuminati in the comics, which means we can see the Illuminati in the movie.

Doctor Strange Wields Chaos Magic

We see Doctor Strange wielding Chaos Magic, as several red-coloured orbs are shown. These orbs may be representing different universes, and Doctor Strange is probably using Chaos Magic against Wanda, after she turns into a supervillain.

Doctor Strange Meets Strange Supreme?

In the next scene, Doctor Strange is seen moving towards someone. As we hear Mordo speaking in the background, “The greatest threat to our Universe…is you,” the trailer shows us another version of Doctor Strange, which could be Strange Supreme. The trailer ends with the variant giving a sinister look, and saying, “Things just got out of hand.”
