Google employees get flexible schedules depending on their role and team.
Revealing the working hours of Google employees, a report by CNBC sheds light onto the operations of one of the highly coveted companies for many.
Last month the internet erupted with debate when Narayan Murthy, one of the co-founders of Infosys and a billionaire, suggested that Indian youth should work for 70 hours a week to help India better compete with the likes of China. While some expressed support for this sentiment, the majority criticized Murthy for setting unhealthy expectations. Now, amid this controversy, a CNBC report has revealed the number of hours Google employees work, providing a perspective on the matter.
Google is definitely one of the most coveted companies to work for, right up there with companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Adobe. And with its work culture and swanky offices, it’s easy to see why. But how many hours do Google employees actually work each day? Well, according to CNBC, it’s usually around 8 hours, but it can be more.
CNBC cites an internal company memo in which an employee requested to work fewer hours per day but more days per week. “Most salaried Googlers already work longer than 8-hour days on the days they’re working,” the HR representative was quoted as saying by CNBC.
She added, “Nobody is 120% FTE [Full Time Employee] for working a normal FT job at Google, so working a compressed 100% schedule isn’t really realistic.”
CNBC also revealed what Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini said in this context. She said that “Googlers” can ask for more flexible schedules, but their approval is based on tier role and team. “As with any company, there are times when our employees work more than 40 hours in a week to meet deadlines, cover teammates, or deliver products and services to our users,” she said.
Ergo, yes, Google is pretty flexible and has a great working environment, but their employees are still expected to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. That’s pretty standard in the tech industry. So if you’re feeling down about working 8 hours a day, just remember that Google employees are doing it too.
