Dharavi resident arrested for strangling 28-year-old wife with a rope: police

Mumbai’s Shahu Nagar police have arrested a man in his early thirties for allegedly killing his 28-year-old wife in Dharavi. Police said he had initially tried to mislead them by claiming that she had fallen from steps.

Anwar Sheikh, who stayed with his wife Parveen and their nine-year-old daughter at Cross Road in Dharavi, rushed his wife to the Sion Hospital and got her admitted there about 9.50 pm on Thursday, a police officer said. “He told doctors, and later the police, that she had fallen from the steps,” the officer added.

The woman was examined by the doctors and declared dead before arrival. However, the doctors raised suspicions over her death and police were informed.

“During the course of the inquiry, we came to know there were constant quarrels between the couple. Their daughter had told this to the woman’s sister, who informed us about it,” said DCP (zone V) Manoj Patil.

Police said that Sheikh, whom they took into custody for interrogation, had confessed to have strangled Parveen with a rope around 9.30 pm. He was arrested on Friday.

“We suspect that the accused wanted to marry someone else and would constantly fight with his wife over this. But on  Thursday, the fight went out of control and he strangled her,” said an officer.
