The country’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) will have trains with 6 air-conditioned coaches. It will have a total of 450 passenger seats.

The Delhi government told the Supreme Court on Monday that it was not able to fund the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project. Dissatisfied with this answer, the Supreme Court asked the Delhi government to tell us within 2 weeks how much you have spent on advertisements in the last 3 years.

What did the Delhi government tell the Supreme Court?
The Delhi government said that they are short of funds and thus cannot pay for the RRTS project construction.

What did the Supreme Court say?
A bench of Justice SK Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia asked the Delhi government to file an affidavit in two weeks. It should contain the details of expenditure incurred on advertisement during the last 3 financial years.

What did the Supreme Court comment after the order?
The bench said, ‘You want us to see which funds you have used where. Every fund meant for advertisement should be invested in this project. Do you want to order like this? You are the one asking me to do so. This is a project of national importance. You file the details.

RRTS trains will have three entry-exit gates on each side of the coach, so that passengers can get on and off easily.

What is RRTS project?
Delhi is to be connected to Rajasthan and Haryana through RRTS project. Under this, high speed computer based railway service will be provided. Freight movement is planned in non-peak times through the Rapid Regional Transit System (RRTS). Rapid Rail RAPIDEX will run at a speed of 180 kilometers per hour. When RAPIDEX is less crowded, it will be used to deliver cargo.

This service will be different from Metro service. Metro has less speed and more stoppages. RRTS will have more speed and less stoppages. This will also reduce traffic and pollution in NCR.

The RRTS of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has three rapid-rail corridors to be built. One of these RRTS is an 82.15 km long rail corridor connecting Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut. After its completion, the distance between Delhi and Meerut will be covered in less than 60 minutes. The estimated cost of the project is $3,749 million.
