The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal will likely intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours and cross the Bangladesh coast. It is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and make a landfall between Mongla and Khepupara by the early hours of November 18.

As per IMD, the cyclone once intensified will be named Midhili, a name that has been proposed by Maldives.

Here are the latest weather updates across the country:

• Due to the cyclonic storm, light rainfall is likely over coastal districts of West Bengal on November 17 and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till November 18.

• In addition, heavy rainfall is also likely over south Assam and east Meghalaya on November 17 and 18.

• As per a release by the weather agency, minor damages are expected in the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal.

• Light to moderate rainfall at some places with isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Tamil Nadu till November 20, IMD stated.

• Heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Kerala is likely to be triggered by a fresh easterly wave on November 19 and 20.

• Fishermen have been advised to not venture into deep seas till Saturday as the sea conditions will remain rough during this time.

• As per the IMD bulletin, “Guidance from various numerical models is indicating north-northeastwards movement towards the Bangladesh coast. Peak intensification is suggested up to marginal cyclone stage.

• An IMD official told news agency PTI that under the influence of the cyclone, many parts of Odisha, particularly the coastal region, will experience heavy rainfall,with wind blowing between 40 kmph and 70 kmph.

• On Tuesday, IMD scientist Umashankar Dash had said that the low pressure area over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman and Nicobar Islands is likely to move west-northwestwards before intensifying into a depression over West Central Bay of Bengal off Andhra Pradesh coast on November 16.

• Dash also noted that subsequently the system would re-curve north-northeastwards and reach Northwest Bay of Bengal off Odisha coast on November 17.

• According to Down To Earth, meteorologists have observed another air cyclonic circulation, which has formed over the south-western parts of the Bay of Bengal. Vineet Kumar Singh, research scientist at the Typhoon Research Centre of South Korea’s Jeju National University said that this might also induce a low-pressure area.
