Cyclone Biparjoy: PM Modi Reviews Preparations, Heavy Rain Likely In Gujarat, Trains Cancelled

As Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to hit different parts of the country, Union Minister Parshottam Rupala said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the arrangements from concerned officials and ministers and directed them to be on alert mode and take all necessary steps. India Meterological Department has issued an orange alert for coastal areas. Amreli police delivered essential items including vegetables and milk to the villagers of Shiyalbet in Jafrabad, Gujarat.

  • Parshottam Rupala said that more than 400 shelter homes have been identified in the Dwarka district and people are being shifted to shelter homes.
  • Around 95 trains running through, originating or terminating in Biparjoy-affected areas of Gujarat, will remain cancelled or short-terminated till June 15, Western Railway said in a statement.
  • The Gujarat authorities are facing difficulties as many villagers are reluctant to leave their livestock and belongings behind. The cyclone is expected to make landfall near Jakhau port on Thursday evening, affecting districts in Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Jamnagar.
  • Heavy rain is expected in Gujarat’s Kutch, Dwarka, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi and Junagadh on June 14 and 15. Five people have been killed in Mumbai and Gujarat. Winds can blow at a speed of 140 kmph in these districts.
  • Around twenty thousand people have been evacuated from 7 districts of Gujarat.
  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed preparedness for cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ in the national capital on Tuesday and directed all stakeholders and officers to ensure ‘zero casualties’ and minimize the possible damage.
  • Chairing the meeting, Shah stressed the need to act swiftly on the important directions given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a review meeting chaired by him on June 12. The Home Minister in the meeting also said that the Centre has deployed an adequate number of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams for relief and rescue operations.

  • Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, and Jamnagar will receive maximum rainfall. Flooding may occur in some areas.

The wind speed will be 50 to 70 kmph Today and tomorrow i.e. on June 15, it can reach 85 kmph. On June 15, winds will be strongest over Kutch, Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagadh, and Morbi. The speed can reach 125 to 145 km.
