The senior leader of the Communist Party of India was undergoing treatment at the hospital for age- related ailments including diabetes

CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran, 73 died at a private hospital on Friday, party sources said.

The veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (CPI) was undergoing treatment at the hospital for age- related ailments including diabetes.

His right foot was recently amputated to contain the spread of an infection due to diabetes. He had also applied for three months leave from the party responsibilities due to health reasons.

WHO WAS KANAM RAJENDRAN ?

Rajendran, a Kottayam native was the state secretary of CPI, a major ally of the ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala, since 2015.

He was born on November 10, 1950 and began his political journey at the age of 18 while studying at NSS College in Vazhoor. At a young age of 23, Rajendran became the state secretary of the CPI youth wing – All India Youth Federation.

Rajendran was close to his father. His father worked as the manager of a plantation. Young Rajendran learnt about the lives and struggles of workers and introduced a construction workers’ welfare bill in the state assembly.

He contested five assembly elections from Vazhoor constituency between 1982- 2006. He represented his constituency in 1982 and 1987, however in other three assembly elections he lost.
