Chennai: Tamil Nadu recorded 20,911 new coronavirus cases and 25 deaths on Thursday. With the new tally, the total number of active coronavirus cases in the state crossed the 1-lakh mark and recorded 1,03,610 cases. The surge of COVID-19 cases also made Chennai witness the first-ever highest 8,218 coronavirus cases.
In a media bulletin, the Public Health Department said, till now 28,68,500 patients have tested positive for novel coronavirus.
On Thursday, the state tested 1,56,402 samples of 1,54,324 persons for novel coronavirus. Of the tested persons, 20,886 persons including 241 patients with Omicron tested positive for the virus.

Among the over 20,000 cases reported in Tamil Nadu, the highest number of cases was reported in Chennai. This is also the first time Chennai reported an all-time highest surge by registering 8,218 coronavirus cases. Even during the first and the second wave, the hotspot city did not touch over 8,200 cases.
After Chennai, the second-highest number of cases was reported in Chengalpattu with the district crossing 2,000 cases. Chengalpattu recorded 2,030 coronavirus cases on Thursday. The next highest number of 1,162 cases was reported in Coimbatore followed by Tiruvallur with 901 cases.

However, on a positive note, the state continues to have bed vacancy unlike the previous wave. The state has 68,624 vacant beds of which 10,703 beds are available in Chennai alone.
