Countrywide – Representation of Muslims in Gujarat assembly is decreasing for 42 years, Muslim vote is decisive in 25 seats – #INA – INA NEWS Agancy

Gujarat Assembly Election 2022 is to be held at the end of the year. In such a situation, all the political parties of the state have started preparing for the elections. In the Gujarat elections, from now on, the political parties have started working on the caste equation. In the 2022 assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party has become active with full vigor. At the same time, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM has also announced to enter the elections. Overall, the election of Gujarat is going to be a little more interesting this time than in 2017. This time in Gujarat elections, the exercise of reaching out to the Muslim community has also started. Because about 10 percent of the total population in Gujarat are Muslims. Which directly proves to be decisive in 25 assembly seats. However, the representation of Muslims in Gujarat is much less than in other states. For the first time in the 2017 elections, a total of 4 Muslim MLAs have won.

Status of Muslim seats in Gujarat

The dates for the elections have not been announced yet, but it is certain that these elections can be held in the months of November and December. For this reason, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress have started their preparations from now on. Being the home state of the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, it is very important for the BJP to maintain power in the state. On the other hand, now in Gujarat, the exercise of cultivating 10 percent Muslims has started. Even though the population of Muslims in Gujarat is significant, their representation in the Legislative Assembly is continuously decreasing in comparison to this.

For the first time in the 2017 elections, 4 Muslim MLAs have reached the assembly after electing them. If we talk about 25 Muslim-majority seats, in 2012, out of the total 25 seats, 17 seats were occupied by the BJP, while the Congress got 8 seats. Whereas in 2017, only 4 of the Muslim-majority seats could be won by the Muslim candidate.

Congress became the support of Muslim community in Gujarat

In the Gujarat elections, the Muslim community has been given the maximum number of tickets by the Congress itself. For this reason, Muslims also vote in favor of Congress, be it the assembly elections or the Lok Sabha. In the 2017 assembly elections, a total of 6 Muslim candidates were given tickets by the Congress, out of which four won. Whereas in 2012 only 2 Muslim MLAs could win. In 1980, 17 Muslim MLAs were in the fray, out of which 12 won. In the 1990 elections, 11 Muslim candidates were given tickets, but only 3 candidates reached the assembly.

Most of the Muslim MLAs who reached the assembly have won on Congress tickets. The same Congress has embarked on a new experiment to get power in Gujarat. Following the path of soft Hindutva, the Congress wants to regain its lost mass base in Gujarat again. Because of this the Muslim community is also not getting proper representation. This time due to the activation of Owaisi’s party AIMIM in the assembly elections, the Congress is also worried that its Muslim vote bank should not be breached.

There has been a decline in Muslim MLAs in Gujarat for 42 years.

In the 1980s, there was a period of Madhav Singh Solanki within the Congress. Solanki became the Chief Minister for the second time in Gujarat in 1980. He had put forward the “Kham Theory” to increase the Congress’s base in Gujarat. Under the “Kham formula”, the Kshatriyas, Dalits, Adivasis and Muslim communities got a large majority in the elections. In the 1980s, Congress had fielded 17 Muslim candidates, in which 12 won. But after this election the number of Muslims continued to fall in the assembly. Whereas the Muslim population is close to 10 percent of the population of Gujarat, which is directly close to 15 to 20 percent of the 25 assembly seats.

At the same time, BJP is registering victory in most of these Muslim-majority seats. In the last 2017 election, the Muslim community has also voted for the BJP. The Muslims of Gujarat are a bit different as compared to other states. Because of this, BJP has got the support of Muslims in many areas.
