Chandrabhanu Gupta was born on 14 July 1902 in Bijauli, Aligarh. His father Hiralal was a social person. He did not have much money, but used to solve small problems of the village immediately. Whenever someone used to fight in the village, he would settle their quarrel immediately. This is the reason why the villagers used to respect him a lot. Hiralal wanted that his son Chandrabhanu should brighten his name by reading and writing.

Being the youngest of the brothers, Chandrabhanu was very stubborn in nature. He did his early studies from Lakhimpur Kheri. Then came to Lucknow. He was studying law from Lucknow University. Chandrabhanu did not like one of his professors at all. One day Chandrabhanu got very angry when the professor said something.

The next day when the professor was about to come to class, he along with his friends put small pins on his chair. On coming to the class, the professor cried out in pain as soon as he sat on the chair. The professor also complained to the head, but he could not find out the names of the mischievous students, so no one was punished.

The year 1930 came.

The British had imposed many restrictions on the Indians. There was also a restriction regarding salt. Even for salt, Indians had to pay asking price. In protest against this, Mahatma Gandhi took out a march from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi village. An announcement was made to break the salt law in Lucknow as well.

Chandrabhanu had also made up his mind to challenge the British by breaking this law. He made a plan after consulting some colleagues. Everyone reached Aminabad. Police was engaged all around. Everyone was questioned. One by one everyone reached the Dumb Nawab Park of Aminabad. By the time anyone understood anything, these people had entered inside the park. Everyone broke the law by making salt and started raising slogans of Bharat Mata Zindabad. Due to the noise of slogans, the police reached the park in a hurry and arrested Chandrabhanu ji. This was his first arrest.

When he sought permission to sleep outside in the open in the scorching heat, he was refused.

When he refused to go to the barracks, the jail officials started beating him with sticks. After that he was forcefully put in the jail cell. There they were neither allowed to brush their teeth nor take a bath. When Chandrabhanu was released from jail, he had pyorrhoea in his teeth. He had to have all his teeth removed.

In 1958, Chandrabhanu contested the assembly by-election from the Maudaha seat of Hamirpur. Rani Rajendra Kumari, wife of Shatrughan Singh, Diwan of Rath in Bundelkhand, was an independent candidate in front of him. Chandrabhanu was completely careless about winning the election. Just before the election, a rumor arose that CM Chandrabhanu would forcefully take Rani, an independent candidate, for marriage if she won the election. This rumor spread so fast that the election itself was overturned. When the results came, they were all shocked. Because Chandrabhanu lost the election.

Fellow leaders broke the party and toppled the government
In 1960, he was elected MLA from Ranikhet South seat. The Congress reposed faith in him and made him the Chief Minister of the state. Chandrabhanu’s stature increased so much as soon as he became the Chief Minister that there was a stir even in Delhi. PM Jawaharlal Nehru liked Chandrabhanu less but this time was such that two factions started forming within the Congress. The MLAs of UP first obeyed Chandrabhanu and then Nehru. In 1963, Chandrabhanu was asked to leave the post of CM saying that there is a rebellion in the public, you resign. Chandrabhanu refused. The then Congress President K Kamaraj somehow managed to resign. After this Sucheta Kriplani remained the Chief Minister till 1967. When elections were held in 1967, Congress won again.

Chandrabhanu Gupta was made CM again. The leaders of the party got angry because of his becoming the CM. Chaudhary Charan Singh broke the party. The supporters were divided over the MLAs. Within 19 days the government was reduced to a minority and Chandrabhanu had to resign.

Chaudhary Charan Singh united the party in the beginning but within a few days the party started disintegrating. The MLA again started coming with Chandrabhanu. Chaudhary Charan Singh had to resign only after 10 months. Chandrabhanu became CM for the third time on 26 February. He himself used to shout that CB Gupta is a thief.
Chandrabhanu Gupta did not marry. There was never any allegation against him. But the adversaries continued to attack him. Once at a dinner party, he himself said that aap log ne toh suna hoga na, gali gali mein shor hai, CB Gupta chor hai. Raising this slogan, he started laughing out loud. He often spoke this slogan in rallies and taunted the opposition.

When you fed food to those who protested against you
When Chandrabhanu was the CM, socialist leader Chandrashekhar announced a protest against him. There was arrangement to attend the demonstration but there was no arrangement for food and drink. 10 thousand people gathered in Lucknow. Strongly performed. When it was evening, everyone was suffering from hunger. Chandrashekhar did not have enough money to feed 10,000 people. He reached near Chandrabhanu only. On seeing them, the CM said – come hungry people, I knew that you will call me, but you will not be able to feed them.

Chandrashekhar said – It is your rule, do as you want. Chandrabhanu said, the whole vegetable must have reached. I already knew that this would happen. This was an example of the politics of that time. Political battles and personal dealings were completely different.

After death only 10 thousand rupees were found in the account
In the 1970s, his health started deteriorating. When Morarji Desai became PM, he was offered the Union Ministry but he refused. Chandrabhanu Gupta died on 11 March 1980. When his account was checked, only Rs 10,000 was found in his account. Even today his opponents say, no matter how much you accuse Chandrabhanu, but in reality he will be proved wrong.
