The Supreme Court on Monday quashed the contempt proceedings against former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi. In January, Lalit Modi posted on social media alleging that cases are fixed in courts. The court expressed displeasure over this, after which Lalit Modi tendered an unconditional apology on April 18 for his comments on the judiciary.

Lalit Modi had filed an affidavit in the court saying that he would not do anything in future that would lower the dignity of Indian judiciary or courts.

The court said – If you make a mistake again, you will take it seriously
A bench of Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar accepted Lalit Modi’s apology. He said that if in future Lalit Modi tries to tarnish the image of Indian courts, it will be taken very seriously. The bench said that we are accepting the apology with an open heart as the court always believes in granting forgiveness. Especially, when the apology is unconditional and sincere. Therefore, we are closing the contempt proceedings by accepting the apology.

Lalit Modi apologized by tweeting on 18 April. He had said- I unconditionally apologize for my social media posts of 13 January and 30 March. I have great respect for the Indian Judiciary. I will not do anything that lowers the dignity of the judiciary. I say again that I had no intention and do not have any intention to tarnish the image of the Judiciary.

CU Singh accused Lalit Modi of contempt of court
CU Singh filed a petition in the court accusing Lalit Modi of contempt of court. He had said that on March 30, 2023, Lalit Modi had made a tweet, in which an attempt was made to tarnish the image of the judiciary. While hearing this petition, the Supreme Court strongly reprimanded Lalit Modi.

SC had said – you are not above the law

During the hearing on April 13, the Supreme Court had said that Lalit Modi is not above law and institution. The court also directed Lalit Modi to apologize on social media and in leading national newspapers. The court said that merely apologizing on paper in the court is not enough. If the statement has been made on a public platform, then even after apologizing, the public should be aware.

On this, senior advocate Abhishek Manusinghvi, appearing in the court on behalf of Lalit Modi, assured the court that his client would apologise. Read full news…
