With the announcement of the election for the post of President in the Congress, all eyes are now on the G-23 leaders. There is only one question in everyone’s mind whether there will be a contest for the third time in the Congress for the post of President. Significantly, in the last three decades, elections have been held for the post of Congress President twice. It is believed that if Rahul Gandhi is not ready to become the Congress President, then any leader of G-23 can contest for this post. According to reports, Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari or Prithviraj Chavan may jump in the fray.

Meanwhile, sources have informed that senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is exploring the possibility of contesting for the post of Congress President. However, he has not yet taken a final decision on this. Sources said that Tharoor has not made up his mind yet but he may take a decision on it soon.

Tharoor, however, declined to comment on whether he would be involved in the bout. He has written an article in the Malayalam daily Mathrubhumi, in which he has called for “free and fair” elections. In this article, he said that the party should also announce elections for a dozen seats of the Congress Working Committee (CWC).

Tharoor said, “Allowing the party members from AICC and PCC representatives to decide who will lead the party in these key positions, it will legitimize the coming group of leaders and make them credible to lead the party.” Shashi Tharoor was also among a group of 23 leaders who wrote to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in 2020 demanding organizational reforms.

The Thiruvananthapuram MP said, “Yet electing a new president is just a start towards the revival of the Congress, which the Congress desperately needs.” “I expect many candidates to come forward for the elections. Putting forth your views for the party and the country will certainly arouse public interest.” from the post of Congress President.

Tharoor said the election has other beneficial effects as well – for example, “we have seen global interest in the British Conservative Party during the recent leadership race, a phenomenon we have already seen in 2019, when a dozen Candidates contested to replace Theresa May, and Boris Johnson emerged on top”. “For this reason, I expect many candidates to come forward to present themselves for consideration. Putting forth their vision for the party and the nation will certainly stir the public interest,” he wrote.
